UNIFA Reignites Demands for Haiti’s Independence Ransom Compensation

On Monday, May 12, the University of the Dr. Aristide Foundation (UNIFA) launched a week of scientific reflection on a theme rich with history and relevance: "Restitution and Reparation, 200 Years Later." Students showed great enthusiasm, asking pertinent questions on this pressing topic. The speaker of the day, Patrick Pierre-Louis, the head of the Bar Association of Port-au-Prince, captivated the audience with the strength of his arguments. "The demand for restitution is unavoidable," he stated.

The issue of "restitution and reparation" deeply resonates at UNIFA. The auditorium was filled with students eager to understand the stakes of this claim addressed to France, Haiti's former colonial power.

The UNIFA students have fully embraced this cause, following the example of their president, Dr. Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who, in 2003, demanded $21 billion from France as compensation for the independence ransom.
