Haitian Asylum Seekers Become Key Topic in Canada’s Election Debate

The debate among the four candidates for the position of Prime Minister of Canada, held in French on Wednesday by Radio-Canada, served as the official opportunity for the country’s future leaders to take a stance on the arrival of Haitians fleeing the United States. Mark Carney, Pierre Poilievre, and Yves-François Blanchet, leaders of the Liberal, Conservative, and Bloc Québécois parties respectively, were in agreement. Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party (NDP) offered a more nuanced position.

More and more Haitian asylum seekers continue to arrive in Canada, fleeing the threat of deportation from U.S. President Donald Trump. With just 12 days to go before Canada’s elections, the issue of Haitians remains a hot topic in the electoral debates.

It’s not only Haitian nationals seeking asylum who are arriving in Canada to escape Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies, but this part of the immigration debate in Canada was focused particularly on Haitian asylum seekers.
