Gangs Near Power Raise Fears of Haiti Becoming a Narco-State

For several decades, Haiti has served as a transit point for drugs bound for the U.S. and other consumer markets. The influence of cartels—capable of infiltrating the political and security apparatus—has never faded. While Colombian President Gustavo Petro points to the mafias of Catatumbo as sponsors of violence in Haiti, with gangs at the gates of power, the probability that Haiti could become a “narco-state,” just 90 minutes by air from the U.S., has never been greater, amid hesitation from the international community.
