Dominican-Haitian Brotherhood Day Highlights History and Humanitarian Challenges

On April 14, 2025, as the Dominican Republic reinforces its immigration controls in response to the presence of undocumented Haitians on its territory, the Dominican-Haitian and Pan-American Brotherhood Day takes on a particularly poignant resonance. Established by Law No. 1105 of April 14, 1936, this day was meant to celebrate understanding and peaceful coexistence between the two nations sharing the island. Nearly a century later, that ideal seems far removed from reality.

After unveiling 15 measures targeting irregular Haitian migration aimed at protecting the Dominican Republic and ensuring compliance with immigration laws, President Luis Abinader has adopted a tougher stance. The deportation of Haitians from the neighboring land has taken a new turn. Immigration agents have become aggressive during the arrests of Haitians.
