Haitians at the Canadian Border: Dany Laferrière Urges Not to Prove Trump Right

Faced with Haitians threatened with deportation in the United States who are considering seeking asylum at the Canadian border, writer Dany Laferrière — as much Haitian as Canadian — calls on his host country to show humanity and not to give reason to President Donald Trump.

The arrival of 250 migrants, mostly Haitians, at the Lacolle border crossing last weekend to seek asylum in Canada in order to escape Trump’s threat, has generated much commentary. Nearly 560 migrants have already presented themselves at the border since April 1st — a growing trend that worries Canadian authorities.

“We have truly exceeded our reception capacity, so this is certainly not the time to add more. Therefore, I am asking the federal government to act quickly,” reacted sharply the Premier of Quebec
