Port-au-Prince Bar Council Urges Authorities to Face the Consequences of Their Inaction

After 11 months in power, the Transitional Presidential Council shows no sign that it can steer the country back on course. On the contrary, under the leadership of the CPT's nine members, the situation in the country continues to deteriorate. Criminal groups appear unstoppable. They punish the population in unimaginable ways with total impunity. It is in this context that the Port-au-Prince Bar Association Council is calling on the authorities in power to “draw the consequences” of their inaction and “put an end to the indecent squandering of the Republic’s scarce resources…”

This strong stance from the Port-au-Prince Bar Council was unexpected. Also victims of the terror acts perpetrated by armed groups, the capital’s lawyers declare they are “STRUCK by the rapid deterioration of security conditions, which appears to serve a project driven by forces working against the national interest; ALARMED by the encirclement of metropolitan neighborhoods by armed gangs for obscure purposes, leading to forced displacement of the population in blatant violation of rights recognized by the Haitian state; OUTRAGED
