An employee of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Haiti was injured during an armed attack on one of the embassy's vehicles on Monday, January 20, 2025, the spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince confirmed to Le Nouvelliste.
"An armored vehicle belonging to the U.S. Embassy was hit by gang gunfire today. A Haitian employee was injured and is currently receiving local medical care," the U.S. Embassy informed the newspaper.
The attack occurred on the day of President Donald Trump's inauguration.
"We continue to condemn the rising gang violence across Port-au-Prince, including this attack," said the embassy spokesperson.
"The State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince have no higher priority than the safety of U.S. government personnel and all embassy employees," the embassy assured, without providing specific details about the security measures being implemented.
"We do not comment on specific details regarding security measures or related adjustments," the embassy explained in the interview obtained by Le Nouvelliste.
This is not the first attack on U.S. Embassy vehicles. In October 2024, the embassy reported that two of its vehicles had been targeted by gunfire. "Two armored vehicles belonging to the U.S. Embassy were targeted by gang gunfire, and one of them was struck multiple times," the U.S. Embassy stated at the time.
"Fortunately, all our personnel were unharmed; no one was injured during the incident," the embassy emphasized in October.
