Pierre Marie Boisson: "Insecurity, a Poison for the Haitian Economy"

Speaking as a guest on the morning panel of Magik 9 radio on January 8, 2025, economist Pierre Marie Boisson stated that "insecurity generates inflation but is also a poison for Haiti’s economy in multiple ways." His observation comes as Haiti faces its sixth consecutive year of negative economic growth, with an estimated contraction of -4.2% for 2024. Widespread insecurity, combined with chronic political instability, hinders any hope of recovery.

According to data published by the UN, 80% of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince is under the control of armed gangs, a percentage that continues to rise. Positioned in strategic locations, these gangs control national roads linking the country’s departments. Through toll checkpoints and obstructing the movement of goods and people, insecurity has become a plague undermining every sector of the national economy.
