Applauded when they score a victory in the fight against insecurity, criticized when they make a blunder, police officers are a constant presence in Haiti’s news. Behind these men and women on the frontlines of the battle against insecurity, often risking their lives, are sons, daughters, and spouses who suffer in silence. These loved ones live in a constant state of alert, always bracing for the worst.

Hérode, 30, is the son of a police officer. His father, a former soldier in the Haitian Armed Forces (FAd’H), joined the Haitian National Police (PNH) in 2004. In February 2024, Hérode experienced the greatest fear of his life. “On the morning of February 19, while I was at work, I received a call from my father.
