While the Dominican Republic develops a dynamic and lucrative mining sector, Haiti continues to struggle with establishing a policy for exploring and exploiting its natural resources. The largest active gold mine in the Caribbean, located in Pueblo Viejo, Dominican Republic, holds approximately 28 million ounces of gold (about 700 tons) and is mainly operated by the Canadian company Barrick Gold.
