Prime Minister Garry Conille visited the victims of the fuel tanker explosion that occurred in Miragoâne on Saturday, September 14. The head of the government also participated in the evacuation of critically injured patients to Port-au-Prince, using a United Nations helicopter. Dr. Conille made this announcement on his social media platforms.
"Today, I took a United Nations helicopter to assist in the evacuation operation of my fellow citizens who were burned in the fuel tanker explosion in Miragoâne. I take this opportunity to announce that the government will soon acquire its own helicopters so that we can save lives in all circumstances," said the Prime Minister on his X (formerly Twitter) account, on Saturday evening.
On Sunday, September 15, in another tweet, the Prime Minister praised the dedication of the medical staff doing their best to save the lives of the victims. "With great emotion, I visited the Saint Boniface Hospital in Fonds-des-Blancs to help with the evacuation of the victims. I salute the courage and professionalism of the medical staff at this hospital, as well as at other hospitals, who are doing their best to care for the injured and support their families," he said, calling on Haitians to stand in solidarity.
The death toll from the explosion continues to rise. According to Emmanuel Pierre, Director-General of Civil Protection, two more deaths were recorded last night at Sainte Thérèse and Saint Boniface Hospitals, bringing the partial death toll to 26. To date, six critically injured patients have been transferred to Port-au-Prince. Emmanuel Pierre added that six Médecins Sans Frontières ambulances are en route to the Nippes region to evacuate 12 more patients.
