Human Rights Sector Selects Representative amid Internal Disputes

On Monday, August 26, the human rights sector selected Attorney Gédéon Jean as its representative on the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). According to Camille Occius, Executive Director of the Citizen Organization for a New Haiti (OCNH), Jean was overwhelmingly elected with 81 votes in an election held at the Marriott Hotel. His two competitors, Freud Jean and Jaccillon Barthelemy, received only 2 and 3 votes, respectively. The election took place amidst division, as the OCNH decided to proceed with the process alone after the withdrawal of the Platform of Haitian Human Rights Organizations (POHDH), the other entity designated by the Presidential Transition Council to oversee this task.

In an interview with Radio Magik9, Gédéon Jean expressed his satisfaction with being chosen as the human rights sector representative to the CEP. "Today's election reaffirms the confidence the human rights sector has placed in me after ten years of activism. It’s a recognition of my commitment in a sector that has stood firm in extremely challenging times. People are aware of the dedication I have consistently shown towards this sector," he stated, while emphasizing the need to restore institutional normalcy
