Since the disputes between Haiti and the Dominican Republic over the construction of a canal on the Massacre River by Haitians, relations between the two neighboring countries have not improved. The unilateral and contentious decision by the Dominican president to close the land and air borders in 2023 only exacerbated the tension. This week, Haitian authorities decided not to attend Luis Abinader's inauguration. Haiti will be represented by its chargé d'affaires in the Dominican Republic.
