Higher Education Facing Extinction, CORPUHA Calls on Government to Take Action

Higher education in Haiti is increasingly in jeopardy. Following a series of crises that have affected the country, the events that began in late February have worsened the already alarming situation of higher education institutions, particularly those in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. In response, the Conference of Rectors, Presidents of Universities, and Heads of Higher Education Institutions in Haiti (CORPUHA) has addressed Prime Minister Garry Conille, urging the government to fund nearly 10,000 scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.

In a letter sent to the Prime Minister in early August, CORPUHA highlighted the "calamitous situation" of higher education in Haiti, especially in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. According to CORPUHA, the current state of higher education institutions surpasses the disruptions caused by the January 12, 2010 earthquake. "At that time, not all hope was lost. Today, the sector finds itself in a context where all hope seems to be fading," CORPUHA emphasized.
