"Haiti Has Been on the CARICOM Reparations Commission Oversight Committee Since July 2013," Says Peterson Benjamin Noël

Peterson Benjamin Noël, the former Haitian ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), provided new details about Haiti's involvement with the Reparations Commission announced by Minister Dominique Dupuy. What was initially presented as new information turns out not to be entirely so. Speaking on Radio Magik 9 on Thursday, August 1, Mr. Noël elaborated on the origins of the commission and Haiti’s involvement from its inception.

"The Commission was established in 2013 following the presentation of a regional research report which revealed that Black populations exhibit conditions linked to the legacy of slavery. For instance, chronic and cardiovascular diseases are more prevalent among individuals whose ancestors experienced slavery. The research concluded that slavery is a contributing factor to the increased exposure to these diseases. Consequently, CARICOM members decided to formalize a request for reparations.
