Dominican Republic: Luis Abinader Re-elected for Second Term, Questions Arise Over Policy Toward Haiti

Luis Abinader, the President of the Dominican Republic and candidate for re-election, won the presidential election held on Sunday, May 19th. According to partial results from the National Electoral Council (JCE), the incumbent president, running under the banner of the Modern Revolutionary Party, was re-elected with 57.16% of the votes cast, followed by former president Leonel Fernández of the People's Force (FP) with 29.33%, and Abel Martínez of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) with 10.21%. The election took place in a calm atmosphere, under the supervision of around 500 national and international observers.

On Sunday evening, the main candidates accepted their defeats and congratulated the re-election of Luis Abinader. On X, Mr. Abinader said he received calls from his main competitors, Mr. Fernández and Martínez, who congratulated him on his victory, praising it as "a gesture of respect and commitment to democracy."
