Independence Debt: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Calls for Analysis of Situation

In Geneva, during the third session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (UNPFAD), the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for the proposed tribunal to analyze the situation in Haiti and to provide reparations, restitution, and compensation appropriately. During this meeting, which concluded on April 19, 2024, with several African and Caribbean countries, he added his voice to calls for justice for atrocities related to slavery.

Following the urging of a group of Haitians present at the Forum to address France, asking for repayment of the sums Haitians were forced to pay due to the refusal to recognize Haiti's independence, the UN human rights chief called for the proposed tribunal to analyze the situation in Haiti and provide reparations, restitution, and compensation appropriately.
