UNESCO Condemns Violence Directed at Country's Educational Centers

The representation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Haiti condemned the various attacks against educational and cultural institutions in the country. "UNESCO strongly condemns the acts of vandalism recorded at the National School of Arts (ENARTS) and the arson attack on the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) and other educational and cultural institutions in Haiti," reads a statement released this Wednesday, April 3.

ENARTS, a higher education center aimed at "the development of artists and the promotion of Haitian art worldwide," was attacked on Sunday, March 24. Meanwhile, the ENS, "the oldest teacher training institution in the country," fell victim to arson in the morning of Thursday, March 28. No fewer than six classrooms were engulfed in flames.

In addition to these two educational centers, UNESCO pointed out that the Faculties of Sciences (FDS), Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (FMAV) of the State University of Haiti
