Catholic Church Disassociates from the Transitional Presidential Council

The Episcopal Conference of Haiti (CEH), which gathers the bishops of the Catholic Church in Haiti, is distancing itself from the Presidential Transition Council, even though the religious sector had been granted observer status. In a press release, the CEH stated that it is making this decision "in order to maintain the moral distance that allows it to fulfill its prophetic mission."

"The CEH has not authorized anyone to represent the Catholic Church within the Presidential Council or any governmental structure," reads the press release from the aforementioned organization, a copy of which has reached the newspaper. While the CEH is distancing itself from this structure, it expressed its desire to see the ongoing negotiations lead to "a genuine, inclusive, and sustainable patriotic agreement" for the benefit of the Haitian people. The CEH also encouraged "the efforts of all sectors and all the living forces of the Nation
