Haitian Education System Reinforcement: 1% of GDP Pledged

Only 1.1% of GDP is allocated to Haitian education, highlighting the low level of public investment in the education system. During a meeting initiated by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) called "Wednesday Reflections," held on February 21, 2024, various panelists discussed the theme "How to strengthen the education system for a sustainable future." This meeting, led by Professor Kesner Pharel, welcomed several speakers, including the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, Nesmy Manigat, the Director of the National Education Fund (FNE), Jean Ronald Joseph, and various directors of private schools.

The education budget in Haiti represents 1.1% of GDP, senior education specialist Marie Evane Tamagnan revealed to contextualize the day's theme. This percentage is significantly lower than the average of 4.3%, she mentioned during her presentation. Such data reflects the little interest given to education by the Haitian government. Moreover, meeting the needs of schools and ensuring teaching quality seems to be an impossible mission for officials.
