Maria Isabel Salvador Offers Insights into Haitian Prisons at Francophonie International Meeting

Maria Isabel Salvador, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), addressed the situation of Haitian prisons at the meeting of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on the situation in Haiti of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) on Thursday, January 18, 2024. In her intervention, Salvador portrayed a penitentiary sector in crisis, often "invisible," as the possible deployment of the Multinational Mission to Support Security (MMAS) looms.

"Prisons in Haiti are overcrowded, and the situation is critical. The arrival of the MMAS will undoubtedly put additional pressure on the system and lead to an increase in the prison population," stated Maria Isabel Salvador during the meeting held at the Armenonville Pavilion in Paris.
