Saint-Damien Pediatric Hospital: A Beacon in Combatting Childhood Cancer

Saint-Damien Pediatric Hospital has been the sole facility treating pediatric cancers throughout Haiti since 2004, despite estimations indicating a yearly increase of 10 to 15 percent in childhood cancer cases since 2017. Dr. Joëlle Denis, Vice-President of the Haitian Foundation Against Childhood Cancer (FHACI), is urgently calling for assistance.

As Haitian parents grapple with the reality of childhood cancers affecting those aged 0 to 14, the medical landscape has seen minimal change since 2004. Dr. Joëlle Denis expressed concern over the limited infrastructure, stating, "For the entire territory of Haiti, there is only one pediatric hospital, Saint-Damien Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs (inaugurated in 2004), specialized in treating children with cancer." She highlighted this issue during an interview on Magik 9 on December 26, 2023.
