Creole Language Takes Center Stage as Haiti Assumes Vice Presidency at UNESCO Executive Board

On Friday, November 24, 2023, during the 218th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Board, Haiti was officially inducted as the Vice President for the Caribbean-Americas region. The Permanent Delegate of Haiti to UNESCO took the opportunity to deliver her speech in Creole. Ambassador Dominique Dupuy declared this a milestone in the ongoing journey "initiated since my assumption of office towards the promotion and defense of the linguistic rights of Haitians."

Creole is not one of UNESCO's six official languages, at least not yet. However, Haiti's Permanent Representative to UNESCO insisted on using it to mark the indelible moment of the country's first Vice Presidency in the United Nations organization.
