Haitians Using Nicaragua as a New Transit Point to Reach Mexico

Hundreds of young people, mostly men, were at Toussaint Louverture International Airport on Monday, September 3, 2023. Armed with their bags, these travelers were seen in the airport parking lot and at the check-in points, aiming to transit through Nicaragua, the new destination for Haitians dreaming of leaving the country at all costs to reach Mexico before heading to the USA.

Evenson, 29 years old, is among those planning to reach Nicaragua. Seated on his suitcase outside the airport's departure lounge, accompanied by his nephew, he is waiting for the agency representatives who have handled his administrative formalities.
