Resource Shortage and Blood Scarcity: Challenges at the National Blood Transfusion Center

All sectors of public health in Haiti are encountering challenges in fulfilling their objectives due to insufficient resources. The National Blood Transfusion Center, an integral component of the national transfusion safety program, cannot be considered a haven amidst scarcity, as it operates in line with the prevailing circumstances in the country. At present, the CNTS is only able to meet 55% of the population's blood requirements, as stated by Dr. Ernst Noël, the director of the institution, during an interview on Panel Magik (on Magik 9) on Thursday, August 3, 2023.

The National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) is grappling with financial difficulties that are having a negative impact on its operations. "The CNTS is not a decentralized department, which means there is no dedicated budget allocation for it within the public treasury. We depend on what the Ministry of Public Health allocates, a mere 3.99% of the national budget," lamented Dr. Ernst Noël, the CNTS director, on Magik 9, on Thursday, August 3.
