UN Secretary-General Urges International Community to Assist Haiti: A Matter of Moral Justice

The UN Secretary-General visited Port-au-Prince on July 1, 2023. During a press conference at the diplomatic lounge of Toussaint Louverture International Airport, Antonio Guterres presented his visit as a sign of solidarity, done with humility, in the face of the suffering of the Haitian people. "My solidarity goes to the Haitian people who are facing a terrible cycle of security, political, and humanitarian crises that exacerbate each other," said the UN Secretary-General.

Antonio Guterres held talks with Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Saturday during a few hours' visit to Port-au-Prince. At the end of the visit, the UN Secretary-General condemned the brutal violence of the gangs and sexual violence against women and girls. "I strongly condemn the widespread sexual violence used by armed gangs as a weapon to instill fear," he emphasized.
