Many may not know, myself included, that John James Audubon, an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter well known for his extensive work titled The Birds of America was actually half Haitian. He was born in Les Cayes and named Jean Rabin on his father's sugarcane plantation. He was the son of Lieutenant Jean Audubon, a French naval officer and his mistress Jeanne Rabine, who died a few months after the birth of her son.
