Haiti received over 1 billion USD in money transfers in 2014

In 2014, Haiti received 1 billion, 923 million USD in money transfers from the diaspora. Mexico received 23 billion, 45 million USD during the same period. Overall, money transfers to Latin America and the Caribbean region grew 5.3% over the previous year, reaching 65 billion, 382 million, surpassing the 2008 record, according to a report of the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank Fund (IDB) published on May 12th.

llMexico, which receives more than a third of the money transfers to the region, continues to be the primary beneficiary with 23.645 billion dollars, followed by Guatemala with 5, 544 billion, the Dominican Republic with 4.571 billion, El Salvador with 4,217 billion, and Columbia with 4,093 million USD. The money transfers from outside continue to represent an important part of the Haitian economy. The funds received from the Diaspora account for some 20% of GDP of Haiti in 2014.
