The United States praised the “strength” of its relations with the Vatican on Thursday after Secretary of State Marco Rubio was received by Pope Leo XIV, with the clearly stated objective of easing tensions following sharp criticism from Donald Trump.
The meeting “highlighted the strength of the relationship between the United States and the Holy See, as well as their shared commitment to peace and human dignity,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
