Southern Haiti Finally Connected to the Rest of the World

Finally, the Greater South emerges from isolation with the landing of the first official flight of an IBC Airways aircraft, the N29 IBC, at Antoine Simon International Airport in Les Cayes, carrying 30 passengers from Miami, Florida. This event marks the end of a long period of isolation for the departments of the South, Grand’Anse, Nippes, and the Southeast from the rest of the world since the closure of Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

The arrival of IBC Airways on the Miami–Les Cayes route meets an existing demand for air transport between Haiti and the United States—one that had been absent from the southern peninsula.

About twenty passengers from Les Cayes, holding their boarding passes, were already waiting at the airport for the IBC aircraft to disembark its passengers so they could board in turn for Florida, according to information provided by IBC Airways’ representative in the South, Carmélie Montuma Ismaël.
