As curator of the Haitian Spiritans Library, I regularly received students. It was in this way that Julia Gaffield, then a doctoral candidate in history at Duke University, visited us in the late 2000s to further her research on Jean-Jacques Dessalines. She later traveled to Jamaica to pursue her investigations. There, she learned that the correspondence between Dessalines and the British government had been transferred to England.
