Mario De Volcy Traces Back to the Roots of Compas Direct

On the airwaves of Magik9, the iconic drummer, singer, author, and composer Mario De Volcy revisited the creation of the compas direct rhythm that has made Haitians vibrate for 70 years. A group of young, zealous, talented musicians, united by their love of music, wrote a remarkable page in the history of Haitian culture. On the night of July 25 to 26, 1955, at Place Sainte-Anne, the rhythm was born, crowning a long, complex process of love and passion.

The early years of Mario De Volcy’s life placed him at the knees of the creators of compas direct: Nemours Jean-Baptiste, Webert Sicot—his godfather—and Seth Duroseau. He goes back in time, recalling those days, the golden age, with a smile in his voice. His father, Léon Volcy, a shoemaker, great cultural promoter of Morne-à-Tuffe, founder of the marching band “Maison Hantée,” counted Nemours and Sicot among his members.
