Skah Shah: A Lasting Legacy Despite Group Fractures

Born in 1974 in New York from a split with Shleu-Shleu, Skah Shah dominated the compas scene until the early 2000s, despite recurring internal tensions.

It all began in 1965 when Hugues “Dada” Jackaman founded Shleu-Shleu. The group achieved rapid success but was weakened by internal conflicts. In 1973, Yves Arsène Appolon moved to New York, soon followed by Georges Loubert Chancy, Jean Élie Telfort “Cubano,” Joseph Mario Mayala, Johnny Frantz Toussaint, Frédéric Mews, and Georges Francis.

On June 29, 1974, the new band, named Skah Shah, performed its first concert at the Malibu Night Club. Their debut album, Guêpe Pangn
