Compas, a Vector of Haitian Identity

On Friday, July 25, 2025, an international symposium on compas was organized at the initiative of the Alliance of Graduate Students and Young Professionals. The event, streamed on Zoom, brought together renowned artists, producers, and intellectuals who have studied this musical genre, which is part of Haiti’s cultural heritage. In his address, social communicator Nazaire Joinville described compas as an inherent element of Haitian identity.

The origins, history, and future of konpa were at the heart of this international symposium organized by the Alliance of Graduate Students and Young Professionals. Figures such as musician Fabrice Rouzier, Dr. Claude Dauphin, and host Pipo Saint-Louis revisited the birth of compas, whose early days were marked by the works of Compas Direct and Cadence Rampa, led respectively by Nemours Jean-Baptiste and Wébert Sicot, the two pioneers of konpa.
