Only Five Neurosurgeons to Handle Surge in Head Trauma Cases in Haiti

Head trauma has never been as significant a threat in Haiti as it is today. On top of the already high number of cranioencephalic injuries caused by traffic accidents, gunshot wounds are now adding many more victims—yet the country lacks adequate hospitals and sufficient professionals to handle these cases.

About a week ago, Le Nouvelliste contributor Jean-Robert Fleury was struck by a stray bullet that caused a scalp wound but, fortunately, showed no signs of brain damage. But what if the bullet had caused more severe injuries requiring specialized neurosurgery?
