Rouzier and Widmaier Call for Reform in Haiti’s Music Industry

Compas, the Haitian musical genre, celebrates its 70th anniversary. Invited on the Panel Magik show this Thursday, July 24, 2025, as part of the celebration, renowned musicians Fabrice Rouzier and Joël Widmaier called for a reorganization of the Haitian music industry. Delays in event schedules, poor recording quality, mistreatment of musicians—Rouzier and Widmaier denounce the sector’s dysfunctions and call for efforts toward building a true Haitian music industry.

Seventy years after the birth of compas, the musicians and producers Fabrice Rouzier and Joël Widmaier delivered a true plea. Yet, the two leading figures of the genre agree on one thing: “Compas is doing well.” At least musically. In this regard, they highlight the diversity of approaches, the involvement of women such as Rutshelle, Fatima, and Misty Jean, as well as the recent successes of artists like Joé Dwèt File and Kenny Haïti, who proudly carry the compas banner around the world.
