Four Years Later, the Lost Hope of Martissant’s Residents

On June 1, 2021, it was a complete breakdown in Martissant. The ongoing gang war entered a new phase: that of clashes between rival gangs in the alleys and corridors of this once peaceful neighborhood. This pushed residents to flee their homes and belongings to escape the bullets of armed gangs. Four years later, the victims—torn between anger and nostalgia—seem to have lost all hope of returning to a neighborhood that was once their haven of peace. We went to meet some of them.

The turn of events that afternoon, June 1, 2021, seemed to catch everyone off guard. For several weeks prior, gunfire had been heard in various parts of Martissant. However, no one expected things to escalate to such an extent, according to several former residents interviewed by Le Nouvelliste.
