Haiti Facing Critical Shortage of Geriatricians, Says Dr. Desgranges

The current state of the healthcare system is an ongoing concern, as each day brings its share of disgrace. The availability of specialists in certain fields, especially given that most of them practiced in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, has become a growing issue. In the field of geriatrics—the branch of medicine focused on the health of older adults—the situation is particularly disheartening.

In an interview with Le Nouvelliste, Dr. Jean-Claude Desgranges, president of the Fondation du 3ème Âge (Foundation for the Elderly), raised the alarm about the absence of geriatric specialists in the country. “There are almost no geriatricians left in Haiti. We were four (4), two (2) have left,” said Dr. Desgranges at the beginning of the interview.
