Albert Ramdin Becomes OAS Secretary-General, Calls for Continued Focus on Haiti

Haiti, through its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, participated in the election of the new Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the organization's headquarters in Washington. Mr. Ramdin, elected until 2030, succeeds Luis Almagro, who served two terms. Many countries brought up Haiti’s situation among the numerous challenges facing the region.

A historic election. This is the first time a Caribbean national has held the position of Secretary General of the OAS. This election "corrects this anomaly." Albert Ramdin, 67, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Suriname and a career diplomat, ran unopposed after Paraguay’s Foreign Minister, his former competitor, withdrew from the race. As a result, Albert Ramdin was elected by acclamation. One by one, representatives of various delegations welcomed his election, calling for a fresh start for the OAS.
