Guterres Calls for a Stronger UN Presence Alongside the Multinational Force in Haiti

The UN Secretary-General has recommended that the Security Council establish logistical and financial support from the United Nations for the multinational mission supporting the police in Haiti, while at this stage ruling out calls for the deployment of UN peacekeepers.

In a letter sent to the Council, seen by AFP on Wednesday, António Guterres stated that "at this stage, transitioning to a UN peacekeeping operation is not considered a viable option."

"Such a transition could be considered once significant progress has been made in substantially reducing the territorial control of gangs," he added, while his office regularly emphasizes that anti-gang operations or the "imposition" of peace are not part of the mandate of UN peacekeepers.
