Towards the Reconstruction of Saint-Louis Cathedral in Jérémie

Construction of the most remarkable building in the city of Jérémie began in 1877 but was not completed until 1901. It took another 72 years, following the division of the Diocese of Les Cayes in 1972, for the Vatican to elevate the "City of Poets" to the rank of a diocese. The building was named the Saint-Louis Roi de France Cathedral of Jérémie. Partially destroyed by the earthquake of August 14, 2021, its reconstruction remains a major concern for both the faithful and the population of Grand’Anse.

In his homily during the New Year's Mass, Bishop Joseph Gontrand Décoste, who has been the bishop of the Diocese of Jérémie since 2009, called for solidarity to support the reconstruction of the church. In his address, the prelate stated that a total of 2 million U.S. dollars is needed to complete the project.

As of January 1, 2025, only $6,400 had been collected by the ad hoc committee, according to Bishop Décoste. The prelate expressed confidence that the church can rely primarily on the faithful,
