Trump Administration’s Funding Freeze Leaves People Living with HIV in Crisis

The U.S. State Department announced, through an executive order, the suspension of work on most foreign aid programs, including the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has played a critical role in the fight against HIV/AIDS worldwide for 22 years.

Foreign aid programs account for more than 80% of the funds allocated to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Haiti. The announcement of the aid freeze has plunged patients living with HIV/AIDS into a state of constant worry, oscillating between anxiety and despair.

Dozens of patients seen at Saint-François de Sales Hospital and Grace Children’s Hospital in Delmas 31 at the beginning of the week were unaware of the new measure taken by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
