On December 7, 1899, Joseph Filippi arrived in Port-au-Prince with a groundbreaking invention: the Lumière brothers' cinematograph. Only four years after the historic first screening at the Grand Café in Paris, Haiti was set to enter the era of cinema.

The first private screening took place on December 13 at the French Legation, followed by the first public screening the next day at the Petit Séminaire-Collège Saint-Martial theater. The event was an instant success, as reported by Le Nouvelliste<
