Transition Period Puts Haiti's Healthcare System to the Test

February 29, 2024, has become a tragically infamous date, for more than one reason. For the healthcare system, it was a massacre.

Hundreds of polyclinics between Oswald Durand Street and Berne Alley are closed or operating at a reduced capacity, dozens of pharmacies looted and burned, laboratories vandalized, and hospitals, including the University Hospital of Haiti, destroyed. This health catastrophe is compounded by the faculties of health sciences, which continue to struggle to recover. This grim picture is the legacy of Dr. Ariel Henry and his government. It is also the starting point from which Dr. Garry Conille promised to do better.
