Cancer in Haiti: A Difficult Fight Entangled with Taboos and Limitations

October Pink, a breast cancer awareness campaign that began nearly 40 years ago, comes to a close this week. Haitian organizations and institutions have, with limited resources, tried to organize activities aimed primarily at raising awareness among women about breast cancer. However, their efforts have been overshadowed by the dysfunction of many health centers, insecurity, and the exodus of healthcare professionals.

In Haiti, as in many areas of healthcare, cancer statistics are not always readily available, and when they are, they are often years outdated.

According to detailed data from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) in 2021, breast cancer was the second most common cancer in women, with 333 cases, just behind cervical cancer (387 cases) and close to prostate cancer in men (389 cases).
