Gradual Return to Normalcy in Downtown Port-au-Prince, General Hospital Continues to be Isolated

From Champ de Mars to Salomon Market, through Magloire Ambroise Street; from Chavannes Alley to Capois Street, and up to Cameau Street, life is slowly starting to reclaim its presence. Yet, in parallel, the training institutions in downtown Port-au-Prince stand like decaying skeletons, and the General Hospital remains isolated, surrounded by deserted streets.

From February 29, 2024, until the end of April, gang warfare pushed everything out of downtown Port-au-Prince, like the powerful backwash of a raging sea. Major institutions and businesses moved into makeshift or poorly maintained spaces, or they simply shut down. Part of the population fled to provincial cities, while others ended up in displaced persons camps. Life had abandoned the city.
