Ilek Santiago died in destitution, without retirement or health insurance. He was 73 years old, with 56 spent in the Dominican Republic, where he had immigrated from Haiti for a miserable life in sugarcane.

Most "caneros" in the country are undocumented Haitians. They contribute to social security in the hope of benefiting from the healthcare system and retirement, but Ilek Santiago died from untreated prostate cancer.
