Violence Rumors Stall School Resumption in Northeastern Towns

Public and private schools in the Nord-Est department have yet to resume their activities despite a noted cessation of protest movements. During a visit on Monday, February 19, 2024, the newspaper observed the closure of various educational institutions in cities like Terrier-Rouge, Trou-du-Nord, Ferrier, and Ouanaminthe. In Fort-Liberté, the congregational schools have resumed operations after several days of disruption.

School activities remain suspended in the Northeast. Despite efforts by some school officials to facilitate students' return to the classroom and despite announcements made by leaders of the Nord-Est Departmental Directorate of MENFP, directors have chosen to keep their doors closed. According to some of them, this situation is due to rumors of violence, particularly in the cities of Trou-du-Nord and Ouanaminthe, where calls for protests have once again been issued by leaders of certain grassroots structures.
