Hinche: Gunfire Injures One in Continuing Protests Against the Government

The planned protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 6, 2024, by the political parties Les Engagés pour le Développement (EDE), Pitit Dessalines, and various sectors of civil society in Hinche to demand the departure of Prime Minister Ariel Henry from power took place. At least one person was injured by gunfire.

The demonstration began at Pont Vincent with hundreds of participants. The crowd swelled as it moved through several neighborhoods of the city. Upon reaching the public square, some protesters threw stones and attempted to set fire to the municipal building, where police responded by firing tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd. The outcome: one gunshot injury, the main gate breached, the facade of the municipal building partially ablaze, two motorcycles charred, among other items strewn across the courtyard by an angry mob.
