Pope Francis called on Sunday for the release of a group of eight individuals, including six nuns, who were kidnapped in Haiti, a country ravaged by gang violence.

"I learned with pain the news of the abduction in Haiti of a group of people, among them six nuns," declared the pontiff after the Angelus prayer.

"While urging their release, I pray for social harmony in the country. I invite everyone to stop the violence that causes so much suffering to this dear population," he said.
